Project Spotlight

2023—August

Bat Night!

We conducted a bat mist netting demonstration (with acoustic backup) for Columbus City Schools at their Spruce Run Nature Center.

2023—June and July

Vegetation Surveys

2023 was a summer of plants, not bats! We conducted multiple VIBI and ORAM assessments on a variety of properties for land conservation. Multiple rare species were found, including new populations of Ohio Endangered and Threatened Carex spp.

Vegetation Survey

In early July 2021, Summit Ecological Consulting conducted a VIBI-FQ (Vegetative Index of Biotic Integrity-Floristic Quality) survey on approximately 80 acres of Lake Erie coastal wetlands. The location of the survey necessitated the use of a canoe.

Eastern Prairie Fringed Orchid Survey

In June 2019, we were contracted to conduct a presence/probable absence survey for the federally threatened Eastern prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea). We first met with a botanist from the USFWS to observe a known population to attain a search image and to confirm that the plants were in fact at or near peak bloom. Following the visit, Summit Ecological Consulting performed a full pedestrian survey of the proposed project area.

NPS-IS Plan:

Boston Run-Cuyahoga River

In 2018, Summit Ecological Consulting was contracted by Summit Metro Parks of Summit County, Ohio to draft a Nine Element Nonpoint Source Implementation Strategic (NPS-IS) Plan, which is now required by both the federal and state EPAs in order to receive §319 grant funding. The plan characterizes the 29,722-acre Boston Run-Cuyahoga River watershed, known impairments and causes, and proposed projects to achieve aquatic life use attainment.

Summit Ecological Consulting worked closely with Summit Metro Parks to ensure that project expectations and deliverables were aligned throughout the drafting and submittal process.
